Fat-burning foods for that bikini bod.
June 17th, 2013

It is the middle of June already and for many of us, summer is already here! Days of sunshine, sand castles, and drinks with umbrellas. But you also want to make sure that you look your best in that new Victoria’s Secret swimsuit. We have found some foods that will help to satisfy your appetite without all the calories and to help you burn some fat. So read the list, go to the grocery store, and get eating!

Foods that are high in protein helps to curb your appetite because it makes you feel full longer, so you end up eating less and not snacking. Also the body burns more calories digesting protein than carbs. Things like Greek yogurt, which has twice the protein content as many other yogurts. Try to buy low-fat, non-fat or low-sugar ones.

Another high protein option is eggs. One egg has 75 calories but has 7 grams of protein. However, if you have high cholesterol, check with your doctor or dietician about the number of eggs that you are allowed each week.

Tabouli is high in protein, and fiber, because of the bulgur wheat, which is a whole grain. If you add beans, extra tomatoes and veggies, you can make this a filling, low-calorie dish.

Foods that are water-based and hot make you eat slower, eat less, and takes up space before the main course is even out! Things like soup and oatmeal. Soup, broth-based and not creamy-and can become a low-calorie meal alone if you add lots of veggies or beans. Oatmeal is a fiber-rich, whole grain and is low calorie IF you do not eat the already-sweetened ones. Try adding a little cinnamon, which is low calorie and has plenty of flavor. It is also suggested that cinnamon may helps to stabilize blood sugar levels, which could particularly help those with type 2 diabetes.

There are plenty of fruits and veggies that are mostly water so they help fill you up without packing in the calories. Grapefruit is full of soluble fiber and that takes longer to digest. Eat half a grapefruit before a meal or a glass of grapefruit juice and it may help fill you up. Watermelon is another one that is high in water content and the antioxidant lycopene. Pears and apples are great and if you also eat the skins, you will get lots of extra fiber! Berries are also high in fiber and they are sweet, which may help to satisfy your sweet tooth so you don’t have that bowl of ice cream with chocolate sauce! Blueberries are also loaded with antioxidants. Most raw veggies are full of water and have very little calories. Use them to snack on and you can satisfy the desire to crunch.

Sweet potatoes are great on their own, which helps to reduce calorie intake by not loading it with all the extras- butter, sour cream, or bacon bits. They are also full of potassium, fiber, vitamin C, and beta-carotene.

Hot peppers contain capsaicin, which is flavorless and helps to curb your appetite and slightly speed up metabolism. Experts don’t think that the slight metabolism boost has a significant effect on weight loss but many people don’t eat as much if their food is spicy.
S
alad is a great, low-calorie item that you can fill up on before the main course and save hundreds of calories. However, beware the salad dressing! I understand that for some of you, salads are simply the means to the salad dressing, but most of them are very high calorie and fat. Instead, dress your salad with vinegar, or balsamic vinegar. Some studies suggest that vinegar helps the body break down extra fat. It is full of flavor and adds few calories to the salad.

Beans have so much going on that is positive that you should eat them all the time! Not only are they a vegetable, but they are a protein and high in fiber as well. They have few calories so they make a great snack and can help you stay full longer.

Green tea has been used for a long time as a weight loss supplement by stimulating the body to burn belly fat. It contains catechins which is a phytochemical that briefly affects the metabolism. To get the most out of it, drink it several times a day and drink it hot, as it forces you to drink it slower and that reduces calorie intake. Plus it is very relaxing to drink!

Another drink that could help (and I cannot say how happy I am that this is on the list!) is coffee- just not the caramel macchiato kind. It helps to give your metabolism a little boost without the calories.
