It's time to energize!

It’s the middle of the summer and all are running around trying to do everything and see everyone before school starts and the weather gets colder. Vacations, trips to the beach, and picnics to the park with the kids all wear us down. Often we eat on-the-go or just grab a snack from the gas station convenience store during road trips and our health suffers. And as our health suffers, our energy level drops and we loose steam, and we have a higher chance of catching an illness.

Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, an internist and director of the Annapolis Research Center for Effective CFS/Fibromyalgia Therapies, believes that an important, but often overlooked, supplement is ribose. It is an energizing carbohydrate that also helps to improve sleep and mental clarity along with having less overall pain. It is also thought that if one with heart disease takes ribose that it may provide extra energy to the heart.

There are three energy molecules that are very important and if your body doesn’t have enough of them, it doesn’t matter the quality or quantity of the food you consume. The three molecules are FADH (flavin adenine dinucleotide), ATP (adenosine-5-triphosphate) and NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). Any food is useless if it’s not converted into one of these.

B Vitamins are also important in the formation of these energy molecules, but both adenine and ribose are required as well. The body contains plenty of adenine. Ribose is a “simple sugar” but it is not burned quickly like the other sugars, such as glucose and sucrose, but is kept by the body to make the energy molecules, DNA and RNA. It is manufactured within the body by a slow process.

It is known that CFS leaks key energy nutrients such as acetyl-L-carnitine, and Dr. Teitelbaum believes that the body may do the same with ribose. Studies showed an average of 49 to 59 percent increase in overall energy after only three weeks. For any study, a ten percent increase in energy would have been significant so this is quite amazing! More studies need to be done to prove the effectiveness of ribose for speedy muscle recovery from strenuous exercise.

The doctor recommends using a powdered form of ribose and mix 5 gms with food or juice three times daily for three weeks, until levels are built up within the body, and then take 5 gms twice daily after that to maintain.
