Oh, how sweet it is!
Oh, how sweet it is!
February 4th, 2013

Pinks, reds and purples are all around us. Candy hearts, chocolates and flowers are EVERYWHERE. Yes, it is that time of year again… Valentine’s Day! That sweet time of year when you walk into a store and immediately go into sugar shock. That time of year when you buy the cheesiest valentines and pass them out to all your friends. No other holiday even compares when it comes to the expectation of an expensive dinner, flowers, and (maybe??) a diamond necklace or tennis bracelet.

Valentine’s Day is named after St. Valentine who, as one legend states, was a priest in Rome in the third century when Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men, feeling that single men made better soldiers. St. Valentine was opposed to the decree and still performed marriages in secret until he was discovered and put to death.

Other stories have Valentine killed for helping Christians escape the harsh Roman prisons. While in prison, it is rumored that he fell in love with a jailors’ daughter and sent her the first “valentine”; more or less a love letter that was signed “From your Valentine”. Another legend says that it was originated by the Christians to “Christianize” a Roman pagan holiday that was a fertility festival. Several versions make mention of a massacre that happened.

There are many stories about this holiday however we all agree that it is best celebrated with CHOCOLATE! And what better way to do that than with wonderful, vegan chocolate! Naturally, chocolate is vegan, as it comes from the cocoa tree. Most chocolate is not alone, as milk, butter, sugar, and lecithin are normally added. Higher quality chocolate tends to have a higher cocoa content with no additives. More and more companies are coming out with dairy-free, whey-free, casein-free, etc., chocolate, which make being a vegan that much easier!

And as always, here at Nana’s, we use vegan chocolate chips in our cookies and several of our chocolate cookies are gluten free, such as the No Gluten Chocolate and No Gluten Chocolate Munch cookie bar! For a limited time only, until February 14th, 2013 you can get the Chocolate Chip Cookies, Coconut Chip Cookies, Double Chocolate Cookies, No Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies, No Gluten Chocolate Cookies, No Gluten Chocolate Crunch Cookies, Chocolate Chippy Cookie Bars, Fudgy Wudgy Cookie Bars, and Gluten Free Chocolate Munch Cookie Bars, Gluten Free Fudge Cookie Bites and Chocolate Chip Cookie Bites for 25% off and free shipping on any order that is over $50 using the promo code “valentine” on our website at www.nanascookiecompany.com.

The truth may never be known about the exact origin of this holiday, but we do know that today over 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged every year and billions of candy hearts are given out to secret crushes. So celebrate this romantic time of year with something yummy, and don’t forget to share with your sweetheart!
